Dr Hannah Amy Leatherbarrow
Oh man, I simply love being a doctor!
I am incredibly passionate about preventative medicine and advocating for my patients. I believe in the power of exercise, movement and healthy eating. The body is so intrinsically linked with the mind, and so true wellness is that of the whole body – from head to toe.
I wish to actively challenge the narrative that a person is not his or her diagnosis. He or she is a person – authentic, real and active in his or her own health journey.
I pursued a career in medicine for the real love of helping people. It has been my absolute joy and privilege to serve the South African community – both at Baragwanath and more recently, at Ermelo Provincial Hospital.
I have rodeoed many a night in casualty in Soweto and have seen crazy things. I have held the hands of many mums screaming in labour and witnessed them seeing their precious little bundles for the first time. I have seen lives taken from our world. I have the privilege of being a part of bringing new life into the world.
I have walked the emotional tightrope of everything in between. I have felt immeasurable pain, stress beyond words and happiness that defies definition.
I have felt care and love for people I have treated only for a moment. I also remember patients I knew for just a moment. A life touched leaves footprints, both on the doctor and their patient.
Oh man, I simply love being a doctor! Can you tell?
I take immense pride in my work and pour my heart into my job. I firmly believe in working alongside my patients – collaborative medicine is the heartbeat of how I practice.
A little more about me:
In my own personal capacity, I love being active – always entering another running race, squeezing in a sunset stroll or lifting heavy things! I have had the most magical opportunity of being a part of the Lions rugby medical support team and really do so enjoy the field of Sports Medicine. I have attended the annual CSEM conferences and left utterly inspired. It’s such an exciting and progressive field…especially for women in sport.
I have worked in a psychiatric field and that has given me such an appreciation for mental health. I really feel called to use the experience I have gained in this specialty in my own clinical practice.
It is a dream I am chasing after – to marry sport and mental health within the medical space.
My faith is also very important to me, and my Christianity is absolutely the compass for my life. My favorite verse is Ecclesiastes 3:11 – “He has made everything beautiful in its time.” My friends and family make my life what it is. I am immeasurably blessed to have such an incredible, strong and loving support structure. “It takes a village” rings so true! “Love your life and live your love” are the words I aspire to live by!
Lots of love
